Children's Experimental Theatre was founded in 1960 by our artistic director, Marcia Gambrell Hovick, to encourage students in grades K through 12 to find and develop their own level of creative confidence through theatre. Utilizing the disciplines and techniques of the dramatic arts - speech, movement, pantomime, stage combat, period costume, dance, historical characterization, improvisation, etc. - students learn to enhance their awareness, self-esteem and the ability to work with others toward a common goal.
THE 48TH ANNUAL CONSERVATORY YEAR The CET Conservatory Program begins the first Saturday after Labor Day, offering varied performance opportunities and training in classical theatre arts and ending with the Spring Play Festival, the first two weekends of June. Young people interested in a performance-based program in classical theatre arts meet Saturdays and after school, with older students allowed to work with the adult classical company, Staff Players Repertory Company. Students explore various theatre disciplines drawn from stage combat, fencing, staffs, movement, period dance, improvisation, period history, cultures and theatre literature, scene work, music, voice, speech and more. Experts in these disciplines teach small classes in this progressive program. All materials are included & space is limited. No auditions or experience required; all students are welcome. Enrollment in the CET Conservatory is on a first-come basis with no auditions required. At the end of each school year, in June, each class presents a play in which every student performs. Every year, 5 to 8 different plays are presented in repertory for two weekends. These productions are free of charge and open to the public as a gift to the community.
In addition, CET students participate in a community outreach program called Traveling Troupe. Three to five casts annually tour throughout Monterey County, bringing the excitement of live performance to approximately 25,000 elementary school children. Students may begin Traveling Troupe after one season with CET. In addition to regular class, they rehearse one afternoon per week beginning in October for two to three months.
The Summer Intensive begins in late June after schools are out. One four-week session meets 5 days per week from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Masks, puppets, stage combat, costumes, scene design, lighting, dance, aikido, makeup, improvisation, speech and play writing will be taught by outstanding specialists in their fields, culminating in a demonstration for parents. Theatre field trips are included. Classes are open to young people 7-15 years. Enrollment is limited. The Break Sessions are five-day immersions into the theatre arts of varied historical periods through the lens of the actors, artisans, directors, designers and playwrights of the times. Sessions are held Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in fall and spring, for ages 7-17. The sessions cover all theatre sub-disciplines, from the Greeks to the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, with a format similar to the Summer Intensive.
Traveling Troupe visits county schools during the school day. Children work in multiple casts and have the chance to perform once monthly in the spring, January through May. Traveling Troupe performers meet early on touring days and perform 3 to 5 shows for participating elementary schools in Monterey County. If you are an educator and would like to schedule a performance of Traveling Troupe next season, please contact us. |
